IN THE NEWS

Top Stories Around The City

Los Angeles set to by Mayfair Hotel for $83 Million. Los Angeles has continued to be deeply affected by the homelessness crisis, now transforming a wide spread of our city into what seems to be an extension of Skid Row. Mayor Karen Bass's homelessness initiative is under pressure as more residents are pushed to the streets. The city recently allocated $1.2 Billion to contribute to innovative and sustainable strategies for housing and shelters. Mayor Bass and the City Council have been approved to purchase the Mayfair Hotel in downtown Los Angeles for $83 Million. The hotel will be converted into permanent supportive housing; it’s a strategic move to provide stable accommodation and survival services. This’ll help create a safe space in a healthy environment by taking creative measures to develop programs to hopefully decrease and eventually put an end to homelessness in our city. I love that the city of LA is taking these first steps! Though I hope they go beyond new developments and acquisitions by also placing new programs in development to help address some root causes of homelessness like the lack of mental health services, holistic services, quality coordinated resources and a lack of financial literacy and equal opportunity.

Did you know about black august? As we hit the tail-end of August, it's not too late to celebrate what’s known as “Black August”. Black August is a month-long commemoration that originated in California camps and prisons in 1979. It honors the history of black resistance; the struggles, sacrifices, and resilience of Black freedom fighters and those involved in the struggle for civil rights and social justice. It’s since grown globally and continues to celebrate political prisoners, organizing educational events, and promoting social justice causes.

Black August is connected to the broader fight for racial justice by creating opportunities to resist, educate and honor our liberation and equity. Recent LA strikes in healthcare, education, entertainment and work force industries show the solidarity and determination of workers to stand up for their rights that were influenced by the civil rights movement and workforce initiatives. Black August can inspire us to continue to advocate for ourselves, work toward initiatives that promote justice, support a local black business or enterprise and of course, be black and proud every day of the year.

Hilltop Coffee is coming to LAX! Issa Rae, entrepreneur, entertainer and co-partner, announced on instagram that Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen celebrates their 5 year anniversary with a collaborative grand opening with the LA staple Randy’s Donuts. This new location is in the LAX Airport at the United Terminal 7. The LA natives of Hilltop will be claiming this as their 5th location and it’ll be Randy’s 32nd location in 70 years. The menu will continue to offer health-conscious items like cold- pressed juice, gourmet roasted coffee with all day breakfast and lunch options.
