I Changed The Whole Ratchet Sound From Just Basic Ratchet LA sh*t: A Conversation With AzSwaye

*Some of the dialogue may be slightly edited to ease reading*

The Los Angeles Music Scene is as hot as ever with the emergence of so much new talent. From Hollywood down to the South Central  there are plenty of artists putting on for the city.

With all this talent coming out It’s Important that we highlight those coming up in the city right now.

LA native Azswaye stopped by to talk music and his come up in the new LA music climate. Check out the conversation down below:

1. For those who don’t know. Who are you and where are you from?

Seeing a lot of my peers get the recognition and love I’ve always wanted us young artist to get is surreal champ. They never wanted to hear us, now they got no choice. 🤷🏾‍♂️

I am Az Swaye. A member of the Az Cult and I am from South Central CA.

2. Being from our city means something, it’s truly a special place. Can you talk about what it means to be from the LA area?

Being from here is a gift and a curse. As a whole, we ride for our home teams and will have anybody back that’s representing it the right way. Especially against someone’s who’s an outsider and doesn’t understand the culture.

We’re blessed and known for having a lot of the best things so when you stay here it’s a different love for it than a person who is visiting. Plus The sh** they see on television is something we are really dealing with so that’s our major con but the pro is to know folks really learn how to survive or dress from our hometown.

3. What are your thoughts on the current state of LA Rap ?

“Hustle like you broke!” I learned that motto and ran widdit.

It’s dope!!! Seeing a lot of my peers get the recognition and love I’ve always wanted us young artist to get is surreal champ. They never wanted to hear us, now they got no choice. 🤷🏾‍♂️ I’m glad I could be one of the first artists to change all this shit. Us young people got stories just as much as our elders.

4. Where do you feel you fit in? In the current state of Los Angeles Hip-Hop?

A major reason everything is happening the way it’s happening. I changed the whole ratchet sound from just basic ratchet LA shit to a more like Trap-Ratchet vibe off a lot of gang drugs cause that’s what my peers be on daily. Free Drakeo & Frosty cause they were a major part of that also.

5 .Okay, so this may be a personal question of mine. But what does the AZ stand for?

Everything in between. The alpha a mega. A-Z. Beginning to end.

7. I once read that you were Top Dawg’s nephew. You never seem to lean on that for leverage though. Has there ever been any helpful advice he’s given you?

“Hustle like you broke!” I learned that motto and ran widdit. But also how I was raised. Nobody around me wanted handouts so I always wanted to make my own name and to learn from there success/mistakes.

6. What can we expect next from AzSwaye?

Videos that’ll help people understand me more. Helping the youth/community. A mixtape that’ll gear y’all more to this new sound I been mastering. Tour. Merch. Maybe a lil Swaye cause I want a kid 🥴
