Newsom issues executive order to begin removing homeless encampments in California

Gavin Newsom GIF by GIPHY News

California Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order aimed at addressing the state's growing homelessness crisis. The order directs state agencies to begin removing homeless encampments and relocating individuals to alternative housing solutions.

The move comes as California struggles to grapple with its escalating homelessness problem, with an estimated 173,000 people experiencing homelessness in the state. Newsom's order marks a significant shift in approach, as previous efforts have focused on providing services and support to those living on the streets. Under the executive order, the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans will work together to identify and clear encampments located on state property, such as highway overpasses and off-ramps.

The goal is to relocate individuals to temporary housing, such as motels and trailers, while more permanent solutions are developed. Newsom's order also establishes a new state agency, the California Homeless Coordinating and Financing Council, to oversee the effort. The agency will be responsible for coordinating funding, resources, and services to address homelessness. While some have praised Newsom's move as a necessary step to address the crisis, others have raised concerns about the potential displacement of vulnerable individuals.

Advocates argue that simply removing encampments without providing adequate alternative housing and support services will only exacerbate the problem. The executive order is part of a broader effort by Newsom to address California's homelessness crisis. In his recent budget proposal, the governor included $1 billion in funding for homelessness initiatives, including $650 million for housing and supportive services.

As the state moves forward with implementing the executive order, it remains to be seen how effective the effort will be in addressing California's homelessness crisis. One thing is clear, however: the status quo is no longer acceptable, and bold action is needed to address this complex and deeply entrenched issue.
